Title: Code of Ethics for Social and Behaviour Change: From Theory to Practice

Description: Co-hosted by UNICEF and the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR), the Global Alliance for Social and Behaviour Change (GA4SBC) will host a 3-hour interactive session to explore the policies and practices needed to promote an SBC Code of Ethics’ values. The session also will highlight measures to ensure benefits and address challenges during implementation. The session will focus on three topics: 1) Power and manipulation: avoidance of abuse of power and dominant power position (power elites) + dialogue, also including neo-colonialism and gender; 2) Behavioural Insights and nudge theory and practice; and 3) The debate about building business value vs. values within the local communities. The session will consist of panel discussions that is followed by breakout groups where participants will have the opportunity to discuss a “good practice”. The session will end with a report-out and an open discussion. The Global Alliance will circulate a summary report highlighting all the ideas presented at this event and promoting awareness of the topics discussed.

Title: Open Consultation Session: What are the Needs of Southern Partners from a Structure like the Global Alliance for Social and Behaviour Change?

Description: One of the aims of the Global Alliance for Social and Behaviour Change is to create a unified, cohesive, legitimate voice and to galvanize international, national, and regional processes that advance impact of SBC strategies. Although the Global Alliance has made great strides toward these aims, broadening its membership and reach more globally – especially in the “global south” – continues to be a challenge. To address this challenge, the Global Alliance has been working to evolve its foundation to ensure more inclusive and active engagement and participation across the diverse SBC field.

This session will explore how the Global Alliance can further enhance its activities and foundation to embrace new and sustain existing members. During the session, we will: 1) re-introduce the Global Alliance; 2) gather perspectives and ideas on how to further enhance the Global Alliance can better serve/represent a wider diverse group of members; and 3) provide an opportunity to engage regional perspectives.

This session is open to everyone interested in learning more about the Global Alliance and who wants to discuss how we can reach and support potential organizational members.

Title: Harnessing SBCC for climate action: Making sense of the evidence and practice now to accelerate transformational change.

Description: Negative news stories and communication around climate change can make us feel hopeless about the future of our planet. Around the world, millions of people are struggling to respond to the climate crisis or need help to understand climate science, engage with policy discussions on carbon emissions and adopt sustainable behaviours. Never has adaptability, innovation and transformation been so urgently needed. As the broadcaster, natural historian and author Sir David Attenborough said “Saving our planet is now a communication challenge. We know what to do, we just need the will”.

To realise the potential that SBCC has in supporting climate action, there needs to be strong evidence on how SBCC can support climate action and drive participation in these essential issues. What is known so far? How can SBCC influence individual and community action to address these issues? And what partnerships and innovative collaborations are needed within and across sectors? This preformed panel discussion will bring together those who have evaluated, delivered and funded SBCC interventions for climate action to reflect on the practice and evidence so far. It will explore three key questions:

  • From existing interventions, how can SBCC influence climate action? What role(s) can it play?
  • What can we learn from the existing evidence on how media and communication can drive action?
  • For SBCC to be funded more in this space, what collaborations and evidence is needed?

This panel will highlight how SBCC is helping to respond to the changing climate and elevating youth voices.

Title: Together for the Common Good: Building Networks for SBC Collaboration

Description: The SBC field is made up of a diverse and varied range of organizations and actors, but we are united in shared recognition of SBC’s importance in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This session will explore how diverse organizations can work together for the common good of the field to advocate for the investment and support for SBC.  Speakers representing networks or alliance of diverse SBC organizations at the national, regional, and/or global scale will share lessons learned about bringing groups of organizations that work on various issues and sectors together for a more substantial collective impact. The session will end with a discussion of recommendations for how networks operating at different levels (i.e., national, regional, and global) can increase impact by working together and creating stronger reciprocal connections between the national, regional, and global work.
